Molecular cross-talk at the feto–maternal interface occurs between many different cell types,
including uterine leukocytes, extravillous trophoblast cells, and uterine spiral arteries, is
essential for the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. This review concentrates on
human pregnancy and examines three main areas in which cross-talk occurs; immune
tolerance, regulation of extravillous trophoblast invasion, and remodeling of the uterine
spiral arteries.
