Materials and Methods Adult mice of the C3II strain were used in this study. The germ-free
animals, 8 to 12 months old, had been raised in sterile isolators and fed steam sterilized
(122 for 25 min) commercial food2. The conventional animals were somewhat younger,
though at least 4 months old.
