Methods Ten normotensive nonpregnant women from the gynecologic wards were used for
comparison with seven normotensive pregnant women (30 to 40 weeks' gestation). All
women were-in the childbearing age, afebrile, and free of recognized cardiovascular-renal
disease. The women were given intramuscular injections of 300 mg. of sodium
phenobarbital about half an hour before coming to the study room. The pregnant women lay
on their left sides throughout the observations, in order to prevent circulatory
