Calorie restriction (CR) promotes longevity. A prevalent mechanistic hypothesis explaining
this effect suggests that protein degradation, including mitochondrial autophagy, is
increased with CR, removing damaged proteins and improving cellular fitness. At steady
state, increased catabolism must be balanced by increasing mitochondrial biogenesis and
