Vascular endothelial cells play a threefold role in the interaction with leukocytes. First, they
are gatekeepers in leukocyte recruitment to inflammatory foci and lymphocyte homing to
secondary lymphoid organs. Second, they modulate leukocyte activation. Finally, they are
targets of leukocyte-derived molecules, resulting either in endothelial cell activation or
death.
