EXT2 are not only expressed ubiquitously but are also expressed very early in mouse
embryonic development (E6. 5), long before cartilage or bone is formed (E12. 5 and E14. 5
respectively; ref. 9). Furthermore, the EXT gene family is highly conserved across different
species, which is demonstrated by at least two EXT homologues in Caenorhabditis elegans,
a species that does not form bone or cartilage10.
