Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is widely regarded as a potent fibrogenic renal
growth factor. In cell culture, TGF-β1 has been shown to increase various extracellular matrix
(ECM) proteins and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP), while decreasing matrix
metalloproteinases (MMP), providing the optimum environment for progressive ECM
